Podcast, You Can't Replace Everything
Ok, what’s going on with me?  As this podcast and time goes on I am seeing that I don’t have three health issues here.  I have one health issue:  weight loss.  And a lot of it.  I have had three total joint replacements since June 2014.  Two hips and a knee.  I thought that was an issue but its not……the best thing I can do for them now is lose weight.  I have a pinched nerve in my back.  I saw a Doctor last week so he could pinpoint the pain (they are going to give me shot therapy to ease the pain) and he tells me (for sure) I have spinal stenosis and a pinched nerve.  That’s one point of pain but my pain is more consistently around my hip area.  Why?  He tells me the sacro-illiac joint.  I guess they are very close to each other so the injection should ease the pain from both pr

To start things off, we are on vacation right now so I am recording this podcast with my iPhone 6.   Hope it turns out ok.  I will have to wait to upload it when we get home. Because of this I am going to keep this short and sweet. So, let’s get this out of the way first, before we left on vacation I was down to 316 lbs.  Yep, finally started to lose the weight.  Let’s see how much I weigh when I get back home.  Last week at work I was walking around without my cane and I was actually able to bend over (carefully but able to).  In fact I waxed our Flex before we left.  With no cane and I had to bend over copiously for that.  You heard me……..copiously. But I am afraid I PROBABLY SCREWED UP MY BACK AGAIN WITH that 14 hour drive over here.  (Should have taken 8 hours BTW). This vacation

THDP43 How to Keep Your Data Secure

Show Notes for this podcast. In this podcast we are going to talk about how you can keep your data secure in an environment that is very obviously insecure.  You need to be proactive and not wait around for the organizations you do business with to make changes and secure your data.  This is one of those things that you will just have to do yourself. Earlier this week Microsoft came out with the long awaited Windows 10.  We are going to dedicate our entire next episode to Windows 10.  How it is different from past Windows Operating Systems, can you climb onboard the free Windows bandwagon and get your free copy, and we are going to throw in some tips to help you adapt to this new Operating System. So before we get started let me just make a simple one line observation here about M

The start I am recording this on Tuesday July 14th.  It’s sort of a milestone day today because I walked over 5600 steps today and when I went to bed I still had only consumed 1125 calories.  I’m certainly not hungry and as the day goes on I am thinking of work and not a snack.  So I hope this is a harbinger of things to come.  I do know from past experience that if I can get beyond the 10 to 14 day period with that sort of calorie intake it will become the new norm.  I don’t know how scientific those figures are, I just know my body.  God only knows how many times I have dieted or started a workout regimen in the past. We will now return you to our regularly scheduled Tuesday night activity. My Exercise Ball and gardening I have been wondering how I can weed my garden.  I cert

First of all I am going to bring attention to the pic at the top of this podcast.  It shows me standing next to a real live Minion last Friday when my wife and I played hooky and to in the film.  As you can see I got to meet a real Minion.  The movie was a hoot.  When asked by someone what I thought of the movie I answered --- BOOYA!  To think I didn’t even know what a minion was (or is) before July 4th.  I still can’t believe I went to that movie wearing a yellow shirt.  I did not plan that!!!! Now for my weight issue.  To be honest I am losing but putting some on.  I seem to be bouncing all over the place.  I have set up my iPhone with a couple of apps that (hopefully) are helping me with this.  They are “My Fitness Pal” which I have set up on my iPad mini and my laptop that I use as

Look, I am not trying to sensationalize  or over-hype this episode or the information I am about to share with you but I do think this may be the most important podcast we have done.  Today we are talking about identity theft. I think it seems quite hopeless to many people lately the idea of keeping your private data out of the hands of hackers and thiefs.  But it is not.  It is certainly a daunting task but not hopeless.  As I have said many times, the success you will have protecting yourself depends directly on how important you think it is.  One of the first podcasts we ever did (in fact I think it may have been the first one……let me check….hold on a minute okay? It Can’t Happen Here Syndrome Yep, it was the first podcast we ever did… “You’ve Lost Your Data – THDP1”.  We talk

Podcast, You Can't Replace Everything
Okay, welcome back to our second episode of You Can’t Replace Everything.  That is the working title.  I am open to suggestions.  I’ve been racking my brain because I think I need to give this podcast a title that tells you immediately what it is about, especially if this is to become an actual podcast.  That is the intention after all.  Okay, last week I told you what I want from this podcast.  What I want to accomplish.  This week I think we need to start with a good foundation.  I am going to split the three parts up and give each one its own little section here today.  This isn’t the format that I will follow for these episodes.  It is far more likely that we will concentrate on one idea per week.  But to start off, here is some background: Total Joint Replacements In June 2014 I
THDP41 Millennials

Podcast
While talking about Millennials and how they are affecting the economy and the Internet, we are going to use two example of how websites are adjusting to this change in the market:  Wealthfront.com and Care.com. From the Millennials standpoint according to The Pew Study “Millennials in Adulthood” just 19% of Millennials say most people can be trusted, compared with 31% of Gen Xers, 37% of Silents and 40% of Boomers." According to a Neilson study that looked at what made their generation, most unique Millennials ranked Technology Use first (24%), followed by Music/Pop Culture (11%) and Liberal/Tolerant (7%).  Juxtapose that with the Baby Boomers who put Work Ethic first.  That study goes on to say 74% feel that new technology makes their lives easier and 54% feel new technology helps

For the past couple of weeks I have been working on getting The Help Desk Podcast back up and running and also on a little special project I would like to talk about right now.  I have been away for so long and I want it to be a better quality podcast that better engages you the audience.  I am also going to add an experiment to our podcast website.  I am adding a little five-minute podcast where I will be talking about my health challenges.  This has indeed been an ongoing saga and I have been talking about that stuff during The Help Desk Podcast when I could have been discussing tech issues with you and adding value to your listening experience. I do want these episodes to concentrate on three major issues facing me in my life right now:  (1) My replacements and how I am dealing with

THDP40 Book Sale Time Again

Podcast
Yep, it's that time of the year again.  I mentioned before how weird (cool) it is when I reach a milestone with this podcast….like the 2nd Annual Laptop Buying Guide.  Well we are reaching another one in the coming weeks.  And that is the Bookstock Book Sale at the Laurel Park Place Mall here in Livonia (Six Mile Road and I-275). Once again I found out by reading the column of Neil Rubin of the Detroit News (email address is nrubin@detroitnews.com.  Twitter is @nealrubin_dn).  I have listed all of this info on the shownotes page which is at http://thehelpdeskpodcast.com/thdp40.  I will also list all the events they have planned in those same shownotes. I am also going to list all this information at our main site at http://itsolutions-mi.com.  The dates it is open are from April 26 t
