THDP39 Inspiration

THDP39 Inspiration

Podcast
We go about our live coping with the day-to-day (sometimes we just barely cope) with life as it comes at us.  As it hits us in the forehead.  If we are lucky we react correctly and we can go through life with as few issues as possible.  How often do we just look up?  Look into the faces of the people around us.  Heck, how often do we just look up to the sky?  You say every day.  You say all the time.  Do you really?  Be honest with yourself. Let’s go back to when I was a kid.  I don’t know….how old would I have been?  I was at least in junior high school anyway and I was smacked in the face with a realization.  There I was mowing the lawn of a lady neighbor down the road.  Just walking behind one of those Gravely tractors.  Have you ever seen one of those?  They’re pretty good sized mac

I will be straight with you right up front…..this podcast is not about Windows 10.  That is coming soon….probably the first episode we record after my hip replacement surgery.  During the next podcast episode:  THDP39 I will go over our schedule expectations for the next month so stay tuned for that. It has been so long since we have produced podcasts on a regular basis…so we are kind of catching up here I guess and because of that this is a pretty busy show.  So this week once again I am trying to keep this episode at a nice manageable length….oh….somewhere south of 30 minutes for sure……just like the approximate 25 minutes of THDP37 last week. I want to thank everybody who is listening to the last two podcasts right now.  You are our hard core listeners or maybe you have some hardco
THDP37 We Answer Some Questions

THDP37 We Answer Some Questions

Podcast
This episode is pretty busy.  We answer three questions from listeners and then I renew my previous attack against crapware.  We have included an excerpt from the July 4th episode: THDP21 Happy 4th of July!  Originally I had included a set of news stories to cover but I pulled them so this episode would stay under 30 minutes.  I hope you enjoy. Question:  “Did you tell me that external hard drives only hold info about two or three years?” Answer:  You got it!  Ok, statistically speaking here is the drop off.  There are three distinct phases a hard drive will go through.  (1)  The first phase is the first year and a half and during that time 5% of all hard drives fail.  (2)  The second phase is the next year and a half with a 1.4% failure rate.  The third phase last one year and the f

Please bear with us while we get through this period.  As I gain more and more strength we will be returning to a full recording schedule. Yea, yea, yea…Happy New Year!! Oops, do I sound a bit frustrated?  A bit negative?  Maybe.  Bear with me here while I try to work this out.  This just didn’t feel much like Christmas this year. I know why….that’s the easy part.  I had a total hip replacement December 15.  That’ll put a major-league crimp in your Christmas celebration!  No work party/luncheon, no Christmas Eve, no Christmas, no New Year’s Eve or New Years.  Just rest, ice and therapy (three times a week).  You want to feel isolated?  Spend Christmas Day alone with only a babysitter to “assist” when (or if) necessary.  Thank God I had my “new” Microsoft Surface Pro2 but that is a

This is a "Best of" podcast.  After it was put together I found I really liked it.  I hope you do too. Hi everybody and welcome back.  Here we are, Christmastime, another year-end, another replacement surgery.  Well, 2 out of three ain’t bad is it?  Actually the downer out of those three times won’t be the one you think it may be. The year-end isn’t necessarily a happy time for the IT Consultant.  In the Education IT industry it is more than likely a time for larger projects to get done.  It’s easier when there are no teachers or students but there are always more than you can handle.  [laughter] a couple of years ago I Twittered during one such break that the true meaning of happiness is working without the presence of teachers or students.  No big deal…just an innocuous comment rig

THDP33 I Give Thanks

Podcast
Okay, here I am writing the second annual “I am Giving Thanks” podcast.  The first one turned into the “Giving Thanks, Happy New Year”.  It was THDP4.  We released it on December 30, 2013.  I’m pretty sure we wanted to release it over Thanksgiving but if you recall……well how could you recall……..but I had to have emergency hernia surgery on November 11 last year.  Recuperating they wouldn’t let me do squatola.  Yep, you heard me s-q-u-a-t-o-l-a.  They wouldn’t let me walk down my driveway….squatola. I bring all of this up because if you were on the outside looking in you would have to say this has been a really rough year.  A REALLY rough year.  Let’s start with last November and the hernia surgery.  Then in June I had total knee replacement surgery.  As it turned out, I waited so long t

Kind of a somber time of the year.  Just before the Holidays.  To me autumn is kind of a sad season anyway.  I have always been a child of the summer.  Growing up I am not sure that I ever slowed down….for anything.  We had a lot of work around the house growing up.  The huge yard….our front yard was a 100 yard football field (with a hill in the middle and a brick house on the sideline).  Our back yard there was a baseball diamond.  Then there was the garden.  It was ….well…big. But back to this season.  I find this time of year somewhat somber because I remember back to high school.  For me graduation…..yes, I did graduate…..was the last time I saw many, many friends.  I’m sure it is like that for everyone.  People spread out to the four corners of America and beyond.  For my generati

Welcome back to The Help Desk Podcast. This is our 31st podcast and I really want to say we REALLY appreciate your following us.  First thought here is that I am beginning to think I have a dark cloud over me since November.  I had an apt with a family that wanted Ed and I to help them get some of their assisted technology working for their son.  Very cute kid.  Very nice family.  We’ll talk about that appointment the next time we get together. On my way home though I was in traffic, came up on a red light at a major intersection near my home  and the people in front of me stopped a little abruptly so I stopped likewise and sure as heck the van behind me wasn’t watching and rammed me.  I get out and I am angry.  I yelled what the heck did you do (censored for our G-rating)?  I said pull

THDP30 National Podcast Day

Podcast
This is the audio version of the Google+ Hangouts podcast we recorded on Sept 30th.  Sorry for taking so long to turn this into audio.  The video version is in its entirety no editing, the audio though has some editing. This is the link for the video version of this podcast on You Tube. All links for this podcast can be found at THDP30 National Podcast Day Show Notes. This week has been something else.  On the average, I would say I went to bed at 7:30 pm every night last week.  I ended up rebuilding 2 computer labs at one of my high schools.  Up and down, up and down, on my knees for two straight days and a part of another.  As a result, my bad hip is a disaster area.  Yep, we are waiting for the official Presidential designation any day now……holding my breath……ok, maybe not.  I
